The evening will feature Righteous Babe Records recording artist
Toshi Reagon.
Toshi is touring the west coast in September and this appearance
will continue the CAUSE tradition of showcasing nationally touring
artists (like last year's show with Sax player John Ellis) beside
local favorites like tonight's co-bill, Gail Muldrow.
Each CAUSE event benefits a different non-profit. The
Glide Memorial Church
is a perfect example of the kind of good work CAUSE organizer
"CC" likes to support. Their forty years of providing
community resources for the hard-hit Tenderloin in SF has earned
them the respect of those who believe on social justice. Feeding
and housing the homeless, providing crucial health services and
working to heal the wounded cast off by mainstream society, Glide
shows us that people working together can make a difference.
About the Artists
In some ways, singer Toshi
Reagon is a throwback to classic R & B artists,
like Stevie Wonder or Prince, or old school rock group like Led
Zeppelin; she can take any style, update it, and make it her own
with incredible ease. Despite (or because of) her genre-bending,
Toshi fits comfortably on a stage at Carnegie Hall, or in a dirty
rock club. Toshi is an artist whos known for energetic performances
and a exemplary gift for writing engaging songs that provoke listeners
to think and have fun at the same time.
Oh, that voice...devotees know theyve born witness
to one of the great voices of this generation.
Village Voice
Ms. Reagons music originates in her love of mixing
things up...[her] vocal style ranges from a dirty blues moan to
a gospel shout to an ethereal croon.
New York Times
Gail Mojo
Muldrow has been compared to guitarist such as Jimmy
Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and Albert Collins. A multi talented entertainer,
her vocal versatility is amazing.
Gail has fronted such bands as Sly & the Family Stone, and
The Johnny Otis Show, and her riveting stage presence is an experience
not to be missed.
"Gail Muldrow is a National Treasure..."
CAUSE
San Francisco based guitarist Mokai
is fast becoming a well-known figure on the local music scene. With
his funky, folky Blues finger-picking and outspoken stance on the
issues of our times, he crafts an authentic, moving sound that sets
toes tapping.
“Mokai is a fine guitarist with socially conscious songs and eclectic
arrangements.”
Derk Richardson
