MONDAY NOVEMBER 15
John Ellis Band
The Mokai Trio
CC’s Acoustic Underground Showcase (CAUSE)
Features Top-Flight Jazz in November.
John Ellis
is one of jazz music's youngest rising stars. Currently, the saxophonist
and reedsman in Charlie
Hunter's widely celebrated trio, Ellis' compositions have become a
staple of Hunter's albums and live sets. With his own group, Ellis combines
his affinity for New Orleans' music (a city that he considers a second
home) with the edge and urgency of modern jazz in New York City (his current
home). With a full-length HYENA
release entitled, "One Foot In The Swamp," coming in February
2005, featuring special guests John Scofield and Nicholas Payton, Ellis
is on the verge of worldwide acclaim. The John Ellis Band is appearing
at CAUSE as part of his West Coast tour this fall with a band that includes
local favorite drummer Scott
Amendola.
After a "jaw-dropping" solo performance in October, our resident
acoustic guitar master Mokai
will be showcasing his jazz tunes with his full jazz trio in November.
Last July the trio packed Cafe Trieste during the North Beach Jazz Festival's"
Jazz on Grant" event.
CC is a local music promoter who started the series to bring together
fans of acoustic music and community organizations. For more than six
months, CAUSE has been raising money for important causes while presenting
quality acoustic music. Along with Sunset Promotions and the Elbo Room,
CC features solo acoustic artists, acoustic bands, acapella, didgeridoo,
and percussion artists on the third Monday of the month. Each month at
CC's Showcase, more and more people come out to enjoy some of the Bay
Area's most-loved acoustic artists, including Etienne de Rocher, Loretta
Lynch, Garrin Benfield, Erika Luckett, Shelley Doty, Austin Willacy, Mokai,
David Jacobs-Strain, Teja Gerken, Copper Wimmin, David Hopkins, and Rachel
Garlin. Each event showcases different artists and a different cause,
from expanding voter participation to protection of the environment, workers
rights, and support organizations that serve the lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgendered communities.

We will be taking a break in December, but Save the DATE: January
18, CAUSE will feature more great acoustic music, and will benefit
the Solari Action Network.

I
am working to build a community of musicians and music lovers who gather
once a month to celebrate the underground scene and the causes we care
about. If you have submitted a CD and have not heard back, come to the
next showcase and bring some friends. I am building each night as a theme
around a specific cause, but I will be giving preference to those artists
who become part of the scene by showing up each month and bring new people
to the event.
If you have not yet done so, come to the next showcase, bring a copy
of a CD that demonstrates the set you want to perform, bring a copy of
your gig schedule, and bring some people to the showcase. I am working
with each artist who performs as partners, so if chosen to perform, I
expect each artist to devise their own strategies for getting their crowd
to turn out.

A note to performers...I am especially looking for duos,
acoustic bands, percussion, world-music influence, exciting and interesting
eclectic instruments. The showcase is designed to bring acoustic music
to the broader audience of fans of funk, jazz, world music and blues.
I have limited slots for solo acoustic singer/songwriters, so if that
describes you, consider putting together a duo or getting someone to back
you up for this showcase and you will have a greater chance of getting
booked.
Follow up within 2 weeks of giving me the info about your music

thanks,
