David Boyce
Ever since acid jazz took a strong hold on the new music scene
in the early '90s, San Francisco's Broun
Fellinis have maintained a constant
presence. At the forefront of the Fellinis' sound, David Boyce's saxophone
brings the spirit of '60s improv jazz and Afrocentric spoken word to
the group, his full-bodied tone drawing inspiration from players such
as John Coltrane and Archie Shepp. In both the Fellinis, and another
local favorite, the
Supplicants, David performs regularly at some of
the best jazz clubs in the area. Boyce’s
most recent project, Cosmic Renaissance, includes a full array of electronic
accompaniment,
but for this event he will perform as an acoustic duo with guitarist
Michael Cavaseno.
Judith-Kate Friedman
Award-winning songwriter Judith-Kate Friedman’s folk/roots sound
springs from improvisation and tradition, with touches of jazz and a
poet's eye on the world. Her powerful, spirited performances celebrate
heritage, justice and the courage to make change. Judith-Kate has a long
history of performing benefits to raise money for important causes, including
the recent tsunami relief benefit with Kitka and Nina Gerber in Berkeley.
Matthew Montfort is the leader of the world fusion music ensemble Ancient
Future. An award-winning guitarist (Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, Colorado
Outstanding Young Guitarist Award), he is a pioneer of the scalloped
fretboard guitar (an instrument combining qualities of the South Indian
vina and the steel string guitar). Montfort spent three months in intensive
study with vina master K.S. Subramanian in order to fully apply the South
Indian gamaka (note-bending) techniques to the guitar. He is also known
for his work on electric guitar, flamenco guitar, sitar, charango, mandolin,
and gamelan, and as Ancient Future's main composer.
Mokai
The eclectic acoustic blues man that the “Godmother of Rock” Nadine
Condon calls “a troubadour for the 21st century,” Mokai performs
each month at CAUSE, offering new songs and a unique performance each
time, anchored by his daring guitar work and bold poetic lyrics. This
month, Mokai will be joined by Seth Ford Young on upright bass, to perform
Mokai’s spoken word song Treadmill (I was a Homeless Teenage Werewolf),
and other songs.
In honor of Black History Month, all proceeds from this event will benefit
the DJ Project, a local community-based arts entrepreneurship program
built on a hip-hop foundation. Many African American youth benefit from
this program that uses music to engage young adults, giving them opportunities
to develop in a context familiar to them. Through small business management,
audio and video production, job readiness training and community service,
The DJ Project model is a creative learning experience for the hip-hop
generation.
CC is a local music promoter who
started the series to bring together fans of acoustic music and community
organizations.
For
nearly
a full
year, CAUSE has been raising money for important causes while presenting
quality acoustic music. Along with Sunset Promotions and the Elbo Room,
CC features solo acoustic artists, acoustic bands, acapella, didgeridoo,
and percussion artists on the third Monday of the month. Each month at
CC's Showcase, more and more people come out to enjoy some of the
Bay
Area's most-loved acoustic artists, including Trevor Garrod of Tea Leaf
Green, Etienne de Rocher, Loretta Lynch, Garrin Benfield, Erika Luckett,
Shelley Doty,
Austin Willacy,
Mokai,
David Jacobs-Strain, Teja Gerken, Copper Wimmin, David Hopkins, and
Rachel Garlin. Touring artists that have been featured include John Ellis
of the Charlie Hunter Trio, Story Hill Kevin Sandbloom and Joe Rohan.
Each event showcases different artists and a different cause,

I
am working to build a community of musicians and music lovers who gather
once a month to celebrate the underground scene and the causes we care
about. If you have submitted a CD and have not heard back, come to the
next showcase and bring some friends. I am building each night as a theme
around a specific cause, but I will be giving preference to those artists
who become part of the scene by showing up each month and bring new people
to the event.
If you have not yet done so, come to the next showcase, bring a copy
of a CD that demonstrates the set you want to perform, bring a copy of
your gig schedule, and bring some people to the showcase. I am working
with each artist who performs as partners, so if chosen to perform, I
expect each artist to devise their own strategies for getting their crowd
to turn out.

A note to performers...I am especially looking for duos,
acoustic bands, percussion, world-music influence, exciting and interesting
eclectic instruments. The showcase is designed to bring acoustic music
to the broader audience of fans of funk, jazz, world music and blues.
I have limited slots for solo acoustic singer/songwriters, so if that
describes you, consider putting together a duo or getting someone to back
you up for this showcase and you will have a greater chance of getting
booked.
Follow up within 2 weeks of giving me the info about your music
