CAUSE Supports Civil Rights for Forest Activists April 18 with
essence, Joanne Rand, Mokai and Spring Lundberg
CC's Acoustic Underground Showcase (CAUSE) and Sunset Promotions
honor Earth Day this month with a benefit concert for the civil rights
lawsuit brought by ancient forest activists known as the "Pepper
Spray Eight" since
they did their action in 1997. These non-violent protesters were tortured
with pepper spray applied directly to their eyes with q-tips. Their latest
lawsuit seeks an end to the police practice of using pepper spray in
this way on nonviolent activists and begins in federal court in San Francisco
April 11, with a rally on April 18 at Civic Center Plaza.
The benefit will
feature a special performance by one of the plaintiffs, Spring Lundberg,
alongside local favorites essence and Mokai plus Joanne
Rand, whose music
is infused with the wilderness that she lives amongst in Humboldt County,
not far from where the infamous actions all took place. Doors open
at 8:00 PM on Monday, April 18 at the Elbo Room, 647 Valencia St.,
SF. Tickets
go on sale at www.SunsetTickets.com April 2 for a sliding scale $5
- $20 donation in advance and at the door. Photos and links to artist
sites
can be found at www.CAUSE-music.com.

Background
CC is a local music promoter who
started the series to bring together fans of acoustic music and community
organizations.
For
nearly
a full
year, CAUSE has been raising money for important causes while presenting
quality acoustic music. Along with Sunset Promotions and the Elbo Room,
CC features solo acoustic artists, acoustic bands, acapella, didgeridoo,
and percussion artists on the third Monday of the month. Each month at
CC's Showcase, more and more people come out to enjoy some of the
Bay
Area's most-loved acoustic artists, including Kid Beyond, Trevor Garrod
of Tea Leaf Green, Etienne de Rocher, Loretta Lynch, Garrin Benfield,
Erika
Luckett,
Shelley Doty,
Austin Willacy,
Mokai,
David Jacobs-Strain, Teja Gerken, David Boyce, Copper Wimmin, David
Hopkins, and Rachel Garlin. Touring artists that have been featured include
John
Ellis
of the Charlie Hunter Trio, Story Hill Kevin Sandbloom and Joe Rohan.
Each event showcases different artists and a different cause,
from expanding voter participation to protection of the environment,
workers rights, and support organizations that serve the lesbian,
gay, bisexual,
and transgendered communities, and more.

I
am working to build a community of musicians and music lovers who gather
once a month to celebrate the underground scene and the causes we care
about. If you have submitted a CD and have not heard back, come to the
next showcase and bring some friends. I am building each night as a theme
around a specific cause, but I will be giving preference to those artists
who become part of the scene by showing up each month and bring new people
to the event.
If you have not yet done so, come to the next showcase, bring a copy
of a CD that demonstrates the set you want to perform, bring a copy of
your gig schedule, and bring some people to the showcase. I am working
with each artist who performs as partners, so if chosen to perform, I
expect each artist to devise their own strategies for getting their crowd
to turn out.
|
A note to performers...I am especially looking for duos,
acoustic bands, percussion, world-music influence, exciting and interesting
eclectic instruments. The showcase is designed to bring acoustic music
to the broader audience of fans of funk, jazz, world music and blues.
I have limited slots for solo acoustic singer/songwriters, so if that
describes you, consider putting together a duo or getting someone to back
you up for this showcase and you will have a greater chance of getting
booked.
Follow up within 2 weeks of giving me the info about your music

thanks,
